Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Opens for 2012 Season
04/20/2012 to 10/08/2012Contact www.nps.gov/caha
The first day of climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for the 2012 season is Friday, April 20, 2012. Climbing hours will be 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily in the spring and fall; and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 25 through Labor Day, Monday, September 3. The lighthouse will remain open through Columbus Day, Monday, October 8. Tickets are required.
Built in 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast. Offshore of Cape Hatteras, the Gulf Stream collides with the Virginia Drift, a branch of the Labrador Current from Canada. This current forces southbound ships into a dangerous twelve-mile long sandbar called Diamond Shoals. Hundreds and possibly thousands of shipwrecks in this area have given it the reputation as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”.

In 1999, the Cape Hatteras Light Station was moved to its present location. The lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet in 23 days and now lies 1,500 feet from the shore-- its original distance from the sea.

The organization was initially called the Sea and Sounds Arts Council and later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing was elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a vital supporter and advocate of the arts until the time of her death on September 3, 1997. Mollie’s contributions to the community were numerous, from serving as mayor for the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the arts. Mollie’s legacy in our community remains strong to this day. Open to members and residents. Cash awards. Please log on to darearts.org

Outer Banks Triathlon
09/08/2012 to 09/08/2012
The Outer Banks Triathlon festival will be two days of events for different skill levels, Sprint, olympic and half events. If you enjoy endurance events, then the OBX course should stand out for several reasons. The swimming component is particularly nice with easy access to the slightly brackish waters of the Croatan Sound with temperatures spot on in the 70's. There are plenty of trees and shelter for spectators or family supporters. The cycling component is nice in that you cross over from Roanoke Island to the mainland and back over a long span bridge, making for great speed and killer views. There have also been recent highway improvements laying fresh black asphalt for much of the course, and a mix of great natural forest settings and charming residential. Lots of flat road for easy running.

Saturday will feature a half distance triathlon and Sunday will be an Olympic and Sprint! The course is laid out between northern Roanoke Island, near Manteo, and the North Carolina mainland community of Mann's Harbor. To see more details and register, visit: www.obxmarathon.org
