This year, the Outer Banks is giving thanks to those who proudly served our country all week long! The Dare County Arts Council is supplying veterans and their families with the opportunity to attend free concerts, workshops, and historical attractions! This week is to show how appreciative we are to those who have been brave and sacrificed their all to provide us with freedom.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Veterans Week starts off with First Friday in downtown Manteo! This free concert will feature the Southern English Band at the Dare County Arts Council. This concert is free and open to the public.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3

Enjoy a photography workshop with Shirley Whitenack! This workshop is free for all to attend however, free tuition is only offered to Veterans and their family members. For more information and registration, call the Dare County Arts Council at 252-473-5548

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9

12:00 PM | Enjoy a Veterans Appreciation Luncheon sponsored by The Dare County Center, Monarch Beach Club, and the American Legion Post 26. Space is limited so be sure to RSVP by calling 252-475-9270.

8:00 PM | Enjoy a free concert at Pamlico Jacks in Nags Head! The Ron Hunter Blues Band will headline the concert along with Betsy Robinson. Music begins at 8:00 PM. For more information email the Dare County Arts Council at dareartsinfo@gmail.com or call 252-473-5558.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Enjoy a creative writing workshop with novelist Michele Young-Stone. This workshop will take place at the Dare County Arts Council and is open to the public. The Dare County Arts Council will fund the tuition for veterans and family members, but general public will have to pay a fee. For more information and registration, call the DCAC at 252-473-5558.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10-11

This Free, two-day writing workshop will be held at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese. Led by Ron Capps, veterans will write and be encouraged to continue their projects after the course and submit their work to the Veterans Writing Project’s Literacy Journal. All former service men, women, and members of their families are encouraged to attend. Tuition is free for veterans and their families and breakfast and lunches will also be served. You can register right here.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11

Veterans Day Ceremonies will be held in Nags Head, Southern Shores, and Kill Devil Hills to honor all who have graciously served their country. The schedule is as followed:

  • Nags Head – 11 AM @ the Veterans Memorial; 5401 S. Croatan Hwy, Nags Head, NC
  • Kill Devil Hills – 12:30 PM @ the Veterans Memorial on Veterans Drive
  • Southern Shores – 11 AM @ Southern Shores Town Hall

All day free entry is also permitted to the Wright Brothers National Memorial on Veterans Day.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15

4:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Learn how to Batik with Robin York at the Dare County Arts Council. This workshop is open to everyone but tuition will be covered for all veterans and their family members. To register, call the Dare County Arts Council at 252-473-5558.
