Located in Buxton, on Hatteras island, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is perhaps our nation’s most recognized lighthouse. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1870 and is America’s tallest lighthouse at 208 feet high. 248 steep iron stairs take you to the top of the tower where the panoramic views are astounding. The flashing light is visible for 20 miles on a clear night. To protect it from the encroaching ocean, the lighthouse made history in 1999 when it was moved to its current location. Open daily in season for climbing, with visitor’s center, restrooms and picnic tables on site.
