Fall Fishing on the Outer Banks

Local fishermen were all smiles this week with an astonishing 98 white marlin caught Monday offshore of Oregon Inlet. Three blue marlin, a swordfish and spearfish were also reeled into the boat. The local’s favorite time of year is proving to be their favorite time to fish as well.

If you have the gear but are missing the boat, surf fishing is your best bet for catching blues, whiting, and the occasional puppy drum, especially in Nags Head. Fishing at the piers has slowed down, but is still a fun activity to do if you practice patience. To hook the big fish, going offshore out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center  is the way to go with many fishermen catching their limits of dolphin and billfish.

Hatteras Island still proves to be the fishing capital of the Outer Banks with dolphin, blackfin tuna, and wahoo steadily being reeled in offshore. Spanish mackerel, blues, croaker, flounder, and pompano sheepshead are also being catching on the surf all throughout the island.

Recent Catches

The Skirt Chaser, out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, caught their limit of dolphin (mahi) along with 11 white marlin and 1 blue marlin!

A nice dolphin (mahi) caught on the Salt Minded charter boat on September 2, with Captain Dave Lusk — who was recently voted as one of the Top 5 Charter Captains by Sport Fishing Magazine.
