4TH OF JULY CELEBRATIONS UPDATE – Postponements, Cancellations & Closings

Avon
Fireworks at Avon Pier, postponed to Monday, July 7, 9 p.m.

Corolla
The 22nd Annual Independence Day Celebration in Corolla has been rescheduled for Monday, July 7. Event starts at 5:00 p.m. with a fireworks display at dusk.

Duck
Decision on the Fourth of July parade and related events will be made on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Kill Devil Hills
Fireworks at Avalon Pier, postponed to Saturday, July 5.

Manteo
Downtown Fourth of July celebration and fireworks, postponed to Sunday, July 6.

Nags Head
Fireworks at Nags Head Pier, postponed to Saturday, July 5, 9:25 p.m.

National Park Service
Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial have begun the initial implementation of their hurricane plan.

Ocracoke, Frisco, Cape Point and Oregon Inlet campgrounds will close Wednesday at 12 p.m., and will remain closed until further notice. The Ocracoke campground reservation system has been temporarily suspended.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will close Wedensday at 12 p.m. and remain closed until further notice.

The Bodie Island Lighthouse will close at 6:30 pm on Wednesday and the climbing reservation system will be temporarily suspended beginning Thursday.

Lifeguard beach operations at Ocracoke, Buxton, and Coquina Beach will cease Wednesday at 12 p.m. until further notice.

The Silver Lake Marina docks in Ocracoke, and Ocracoke and Hatteras Island visitor centers will close Wednesday at 12 p.m.

Bodie Island Visitor Center, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site evening programs on Wednesday are cancelled, and the sites will be closed Thursday and Friday.

All Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches will be closed to off-road vehicles Wednesday by 9:00 p.m. and remain closed until further notice.

The Buxton and Ocracoke Off-Road Vehicle Permit offices will close at noon on Wednesday, and the Bodie Island Off-Road Vehicle Permit office will close at 4:30 p.m.

OBX Races

If it’s a challenge you seek to celebrate the day, then look no further than the 3rd Annual Freedom 5K. The race will begin and end in front of the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. Fun for the whole family will include:

– Little Sparkler 1/2 Mile Fun Run for kids 10 and under beginning at 7:45 a.m.

– Old Glory Mile Run beginning at 7 a.m.

– Firecracker & Freedom 5K beginning at 7 a.m.

Outer Banks 4th of July Parades

Whether you’re finishing your race or just rolling out of your sandy sheets, head to Duck, NC and see for yourself why ABC News named it one of the country’s Top 10 Best Small-Town Independence Day Celebrations. The one-mile parade begins at 9 a.m. at the crest of the hill on Scarborough Lane and follows down towards the ocean along Ocean Way, Christopher Drive, and ending up on Duck Road (NC 12). Following the parade there will be live music and refreshments in Town Park, located at 1200 Duck Road.

Whether you choose to spend the day flying kites over Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head, or body surfing in Kitty Hawk, no 4th of July is complete without the quintessential fireworks show and there’s no better place to see one than from a blanket on the Outer Banks. The limitless sky and numerous shows along the barrier islands provide views of multiple shows at once. Some of the best programs include:

Roanoke Island Festival Park – The Celebration at the Outdoor Pavilion at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. Bring a picnic, a blanket and the family and come early to enjoy a full day of activities and live music beginning at 3p.m downtown, followed by a concert at the Outdoor Pavilion at 8. The band, which is made up of more than 40 professional airman-musicians, will be playing a variety of great orchestral classics and patriotic songs. Gates open at 6. Fireworks put on by the town of Manteo will follow the concert, beginning at 9:30 p.m. An impressive display illuminates the waterway and Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in a brilliant shower that is sure to make you happy you chose Manteo for your 4th of July fireworks show.

The Whalehead Club – Quite possibly the best fireworks on the Outer Banks can be found at the opposite end of the islands, in Corolla. The Whalehead Club, located at 1100 Club Road just off of NC 12 and positioned right beside The Currituck Lighthouse, is converted into an outdoor festival from 6-9:30 p.m. With food, fun activities, and a stage featuring music for all ages, the historic house provides a beautiful backdrop for an evening of fun. The grand finale comes at dusk, however, when spectators take to their blankets and lawn chairs and watch as the entire sky is taken over by massive displays of light and color. Definitely a must-see if you’re in the Corolla area.

Piers – Fireworks can also be found at multiple piers along the Outer Banks, so grab a blanket and plant yourself on the beach Oceanside to enjoy a multiple-show display.

Nags Head Fishing Pier will begin their show at 9:25 p.m. in Nags Head at MP 11.5.
