Vacations are a time for relaxation, family time and exploring, but some vacationers don’t like to sacrifice their healthy eating and active lifestyle while on a week long trip.  We’ve created a list of the Top 10 Tips for Staying Healthy on Vacation for those who want to indulge in the local cuisine, and activities while staying healthy

1.  Do this: Walk on the beach
Make it a daily, or nightly routine, and take a stroll on the beach and get your cardio in while taking in the serenity of the waves crashing next to you

2.  Eat this: The Salad Bowl salads
Made to order right in front of you, the Salad Bowl is located in Kitty Hawk and is known for their healthy and fast food.  They encourage you to get creative with you meal and you get to pick your greens, protein, and toppings to your hearts content.  Try: the Asian Sensation. It’s a salad packed with grilled shrimp, tangerines, crunchy goodies like carrots and almonds, and topped with asian vinaigrette

3.  Do this: Sight See
With multiple lighthouses from Corolla to Hatteras, the Wright Brothers Memorial, and Jockeys Ridge, you won’t run out of places to visit.  These Outer Banks must see sights all require a lot of walking around, up and down dunes, and in some cases 220 stairs, so you can get your steps in while taking in the landmarks

4.  Eat this: The Spot smoothie bowls
This newcomer has taken the beach by the storm! Located in Nags Head, at The Spot you can choose from a selection of smoothie bowls, or you can build your own. A refreshing and filling alternative to ice cream on a hot day, this healthy treat is packed with fruits to give boost your energy level and take on the rest of your beach day. Try:  the Barnes Street Bowl. This Acai bowl is a smoothie blend of acai and banana, and topped with strawberries, granola, honey and coconut

5.  Do this:  Watersports
Get active with your family- with water all around you, you can choose from a variety or water sports while visiting the Outer Banks.  Ocean Atlantic Rentals has kayaks, surfboards, etc that you can rent. Pay a little extra and they’ll even deliver to your house!  Try: Stand Up Paddleboard.  Rent a SUP board and get out in the ocean, once your past the waves you can paddle around on this larger version of the surfboard, while working on your core and balance.

6.  Eat this:  Farmdog smoothies
This surf school located on the beach road at milepost 10.5 also has a coffee shop in their building, which is also known for its delicious and organic smoothies.   With a variety of options, you can stop in and quickly get your favorite fresh fruit smoothie.  Try: The Pink One.  True to its name, this smoothie is made with strawberries, pineapples, bananas and coconut milk.

7.  Do this:  Ride Bikes
On the next family outing, grab a bike instead of driving.  By opting to ride bikes you get to work up an apatite for that local restaurants you’re heading to, and enjoy the weather while using this alternative method of transportation.

8.  Do this: Wave jumping
When the kids want to drag you out into the waves- go!  Combating the waves and trying to stay standing (while holding a little one), is a great work out on the core!

9.  Eat this: The Juice Jar
An all natural juice bar and eatery, this charming Corolla cottage is behind the bookstore in the Historic Corolla Village.  This take out only restaurant also has a garden they encourage their visitors to admire, displaying some of their ingredients grown on site.  Try:  A organic pressed juice. Take home and add champagne for a healthy version of a cocktail- and of course enjoy while sitting on the beach under the sun!

10.  Do this: Hike Nags Head Woods
While most people don’t think of the woods when they think of the OBX, we actually have a huge Preserve protected by the Nature Conservancy. This hidden gem is compromised of over 1400 acres of woods, marshes, and little soundfront beaches, with 7 various trails for hiking.  Try: The Roanoke Trail. This 1.5 mile path through the woods ends at the beautiful Roanoke sound.
