Outer Banks, NC.-The N.C. Department of Transportation is set to close N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk between Lillian Street and White Avenue to rebuild a dune that was taken out by a nor’easter at the beginning of May.

Weather pending, the closing is scheduled to start Monday, July 13 and last about 30 days, but work could begin as early as Friday, the NCDOT said in a statement.

Carolina Marine Structures was awarded a $335,630 contract for the project, which will involve installing sandbags and rebuilding the dune.

Repairs in early May included rebuilding a section of N.C. 12 that had washed out and making temporary repairs to the dune to protect the road. Now that permits are in place, crews can rebuild the dune completely, the statement said.
