Bodie Island Lighthouse

Pronounced “body,” The Bodie Island lighthouse is located before Oregon Inlet on Hwy. 12 at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Fearing that the 80-foot tower would be used by Union forces as an observation post, the original lighthouse was destroyed during the Civil War. Today’s lighthouse was constructed in 1872 and stands 156 feet tall and has 214 stairs leading to the top. Its light can be seen for 19 miles. Although not opened for climbing, visitors may take a glimpse inside the base. The visitor center is open daily in season.
