May on the Outer Banks is something special! The weather begins to warm up, favorite local businesses begin to open their doors after long winters, and the beaches are wide open! Most people who visit the Outer Banks tend to come from June to August, but May brings just as much fun as those summer months.

Outer Banks May Weather

The Outer Banks in May is something that everyone should experience!

May on the Outer Banks brings some of the most beautiful, mild weather. With daytime temps ranging from about 70º to 78º and night time temps ranging from about 57º to 66º, it’s the perfect time to get outside! Explore attractions like the many OBX Lighthouses, nature trails, and of course, the beach! There are some occasional, rainy days in May but even so, indoor attractions like the North Carolina Aquarium, Jennette’s Pier, and The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum are all open with fewer crowds.

Outer Banks May Events

The OBX Rod and Custom Festival is perfect for those who have an interest in classic cars and love the beach too!

Loads of fun events are happening on the Outer Banks in May that take you beyond the beach. The OBX Rod and Custom Festival and KidsFest are just a couple of reoccurring events that happen during this shoulder season. There are plenty of other events that pop up too that are fun for the whole family.

Outer Banks May Rental Rates

The Outer Banks in May brings some serious savings on rental homes.

Another great thing about May on the Outer Banks? Lower rental rates! If you need a little convincing, chew on this for a second. In May, you can rent a 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom oceanfront Corolla home for about $5,000 for the week. During peak summer months like July, you’d be paying close to $9,600. May OBX vacations are perfect for those who are thrifty but still want to relax in the lap of luxury.

May Recommendations From A Local

The Elizabethan Gardens is a stunning OBX attraction, especially during the month of May.

From a lifetime Outer Banks native, my personal recommendation for a May visit is to check out Manteo! Manteo is where I grew up and the pleasant weather that May brings offers you the perfect opportunity to walk around downtown Manteo and see all there is to see on Roanoke Island. The Elizabethan Gardens is one of my favorite attractions. Located on the north end of Manteo, you’ll find stunning flowers blooming during May (which make for great photo ops). You’ll be able to take your time and stroll around the gardens. After visiting The Gardens, you can also take a short drive to Downtown Manteo to walk the docks, grab a bite to eat, and check out some of the fun local boutiques!

Long story short…
