Oh, October, we love you! The month where we start to get a taste of fall on the Outer Banks but still warm enough to not let summer go quite yet! Similar to the Outer Banks in September, October brings good weather, great events, and even less traffic! We’ve got your go to guide of the Outer Banks in October right here!

Outer Banks October Weather

All you need is a pole, a hook, and of course a valid NC Fishing License 😉

While October on the Outer Banks is still home to hurricane season, there have been few documented storms that made landfall during this fall month. The last hurricane to hit the OBX in October was Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Even though the probability of facing a hurricane in October is low, we still recommend purchasing travel insurance for your visit. The air temperature in October can range anywhere from 60º to 71º and the water temperatures ranging from 68º to 72º. Still perfect weather for long strolls on the beach, cast out a line, or simply walking around to explore the OBX!

Outer Banks October Events

Come hungry, leave full of local seafood and education!

Food lovers unite! October on the Outer Banks is home to some of our favorite food centered events. The Outer Banks Seafood Festival is one of our favorites and home to some of the best food and local brews you can find on the OBX. If you’re not much of a foodie, don’t worry. Events like the OBX Brewtag, OBX Wind Competition, and the Duck Jazz Festival happen in October too!

October Recommendations From A Local

Having lived on the Outer Banks my entire life, I absolutely love the Fall here. If you decide to take your OBX vacation in October; my number one recommendation is to get outside! It may not be bikini and boardshort weather, but it’s definitely discovering weather. Take a visit to one of our amazing lighthouses! The weather is super mild so you won’t get hot climbing the steps or walking around the park. Ride over to Manteo and visit Roanoke Island Festival Park and learn about the colony of 1585. You can even just stroll the boardwalks of downtown Manteo and pop in to some of the small, mom and pop shops. My second suggestion? Spend time on the beach. Like I said, you may not be able to wear a bathing suit, but if you have a beach chair and a good book, it doesn’t matter! October is truly one of the most peaceful times on the Outer Banks. You’ll be able to unwind, and take it slow.
